The Award is named after a former employee of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Nova Scotia), the late Victor Thibault. Victor had been a former construction foreman before his spinal cord injury. He then started working for CPA NS and used his skills and expertise from his previous job to lobby for a building code that would include a section dealing with access for persons with disabilities. His hard work in helping to develop the barrier free section of the Nova Scotia Building Code is still valued and appreciated today.

The Victor Thibault Award for Barrier Free Design will be awarded during the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Nova Scotia) ChairLeader Event May 3rd to May 7th, 2010. The Award is given to a non-profit organization, business or government agency that renovates an existing facility to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. If you know of a facility that has completed accessible renovations in 2009 please contact us. Deadline for nominations is April 9, 2010.
Some past winners include Lord Nelson Hotel, Aylesford Lake Municipal Beach, Kingston United Baptist Church, Rum Hollow Seaside Bed and Breakfast and The Old Orchard Inn. The winner is chosen by a committee of staff and CPA NS board members. In the last four years we have received forty nominations.
The main purpose of this award is to recognize the contributions of businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies with regards to accessible renovations. They assist with making facilities more wheelchair accessible, so persons with disabilities can have the opportunity for full community participation. Their recognition encourages others to engage in similar contributions for the disability community.
